The Tapestry of Life

Welcome! I am Barbara Gordon, and I offer psychotherapy services to individuals, couples and families. When I first set up my private office, I wanted to incorporate something personal. At the time, I didn’t realize the rug I hung on my wall would become a metaphor for the clinical work I do.

My rug was brought to the United States from Russia by my great grandmother in the late 1800’s. It bears the badge of a life well-lived. The wear and tear of generations of family, friends and many beloved pets has left its edges frayed, its threads worn thin, its once-vibrant colors faded. And yet, the interwoven threads provide it the strength to remain intact.

Anxiety, sadness, relationship conflict, grief – the emotions we all experience –are all threads in our individual weavings. We experience them and usually move on. But sometimes they overwhelm us: they become knotted with a thread from our past. If we examine them closely, we can work to disentangle them, beginning the healing process and learning how to weave a happier and more fulfilling life. And, sometimes like the rug, we accept that a corner remains somewhat frayed.

When we meet, I will help you discover greater clarity and awareness of yourself and your relationships, learn new ways of coping and communicating, and understand the tapestry of your life.
